To mark the festive conclusion of the DIGITAL ART LAB, we warmly invite you to an informal get-together. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants of VRHAM! 2025 and the DIGITAL ART LAB, exhibiting artists, and members of Hamburg’s art and XR scene will come together to exchange ideas, connect, and wind down the day.

With drinks and good vibes, there will be plenty of space for spontaneous conversations, fresh ideas, and casual encounters – somewhere between practice and vision, after-work and future.

The event is open to anyone interested in digital creativity, immersive media, and new perspectives on art and technology who wants to end their festival evening on a laid-back note.

Admission to the exhibition is free for event attendees.

Peggy Schoenegge (VRHAM!) with Artist Almagul Menlibayeva

How does an artistic vision take shape, and what thoughts lie behind the works on display?
In Meet the Artist, we guide visitors through the exhibition together with the participating artists, offering personal insights into their ideas, working processes, and the stories behind their pieces. It’s an opportunity to ask questions and gain direct access to artistic perspectives.
A format for anyone curious to experience art firsthand—beyond traditional art education formats.

Almagul Menlibayeva’s immersive installation The Map of Nomadizing Reimagining #3 brings together traditional craft techniques with AI-generated hallucinations, forming a living archive of embodied memory and feminist resistance. This postdigital textile work serves as an imagined cartography of Central Asia, created by the artist in collaboration with artificial intelligence and weavers from Kazakhstan. The map highlights sites affected by the dissolution of the Soviet Union—places Menlibayeva has explored throughout her practice. AI-generated videos, flowing across the ground like a river, draw upon documentary footage the artist captured at the locations marked on the map, reflecting on ecological collapse and the fragmentation of identity.

Danish artist and designer Carl Emil Carlsen’s VR experience Intangible investigates the oddly satisfying sensation of interacting with simulations of natural phenomena while calling attention to the controversial idea of reconnecting with nature through computational means. Each encounter with artificial nature turns into a digital sculpture accompanied by a soundscape by Anna Fišere.

The virtual reality experience Virtual ISLANDs by French-Jamaican artist Olivia Mc Gilchrist invites audiences to experience VR as a fluid and transformative space. Inspired by the artist’s dual Caribbean and European heritage, the work highlights the relation between water and the fluidity of hybrid identities. Within this immersive journey, audiences are submerged in an underwater environment, following the particle-traced movements of aerial performer Keely Whitelaw which evokes a profound sense of weightlessness.

In the CODING ART LABs, artists open up their digital toolkits. In hands-on workshops, participants learn how to develop their own creative applications—from interactive imagery to generative worlds.
The Labs are open to anyone eager to explore digital tools for artistic expression—no prior experience necessary. The focus lies on artistic approaches to technology, seeing it as both a medium of expression and a space for experimentation.

13 June 2025: Hello Avatar! – Designing Interactive Avatars

In this workshop, participants will create their own speaking avatars for virtual environments. Together with artist Dagmar Schürrer, you’ll learn how to integrate AI-driven dialogues using large language models (LLMs) into XR settings.
Working with the Unity software, you’ll be guided step by step in a practical, accessible way.

The focus is on creative experimentation:
How can an avatar respond, speak, think? And how can technology become a tool for artistic expression?

Please bring your own laptop. Installation instructions for the software will be sent shortly before the workshop.

Target group: Beginners and advanced users interested in exploring creative applications of AI in XR contexts. No prior knowledge required.

Time: 11 am – 3 pm
Group size: 15 participants
Language: German
Location: Mittelbau Kreativgesellschaft Stockmeyerstraße 43, 20457 Hamburg

Dagmar Schürrer works in the field of expanded animation and extended reality (XR) technologies. Her artistic practice is often inspired by scientific concepts from biology or neuroscience. In her hybrid works, she combines these with emerging technologies such as XR and artificial intelligence, digital worldbuilding, and poetic interpretations of human consciousness and its entanglement with the environment. By merging multilayered animations with spatial multimedia installations, she creates contemplative spaces for experience and reflection, offering a lens through which the evolving interplay between technology and human perception can be explored.

South Korean artist Yaloo’s Shininho is a holographic installation that highlights links between data banks, piracy, and K-Pop within capitalism. Yaloo’s dynamic digital collages follow the imagined voyage of 86-year-old pirate captain Shin In-ho, inspired by the most successful pirate in history, Zheng Yi Sao (1775–1844). Blending historical facts, science fiction, and personal memories, the work reimagines piracy for the digital age, with Shin In-ho and her crew stealing valuable memories for big data centres, questioning whether data is today’s ultimate treasure.

12 June 2025: Cinema 4D Kickstart – Bringing 3D Animation to Life

This hands-on workshop dives into movement, form, and digital creation in 3D. Using Cinema 4D – one of the leading software solutions for motion graphics – participants will learn how to animate virtual objects and bring them to life. From floating structures and rotating forms to fluid motion, Cinema 4D offers a wide range of creative tools to develop animations for XR, digital art, or audiovisual installations.

Together, we’ll explore the fundamentals of 3D animation: keyframes, timelines, motion sequences, and the creation of initial visual scenes in virtual space. This workshop is open to anyone keen to explore creative 3D design – with or without prior experience.

Please bring your own laptop. Information on software installation will be provided shortly before the workshop.

From Canvas to Cloud – The Digital Art Revolution of the 21st Century

Our world is rapidly changing through technologies such as artificial intelligence, immersive media and virtual spaces. Art becomes both a mirror and a guide, addressing questions of digital identity, human relationships, and the power of algorithms. How will our society continue to evolve, and how is technologisation transforming art?
In this panel, experts from international institutions will discuss current developments in digital art and the relevance these transformations hold for society – and for their own organisations. How can museums, cultural spaces and curatorial practices respond to these changes, and what role do they play in shaping a digital future for art? The discussion will highlight how artists around the world are responding to technological change – with visions that not only help us understand the future, but actively shape it.
