In the CODING ART LABs, artists open up their digital toolkits. In hands-on workshops, participants learn how to develop their own creative applications—from interactive imagery to generative worlds.
The Labs are open to anyone eager to explore digital tools for artistic expression—no prior experience necessary. The focus lies on artistic approaches to technology, seeing it as both a medium of expression and a space for experimentation.

13 June 2025: Hello Avatar! – Designing Interactive Avatars

In this workshop, participants will create their own speaking avatars for virtual environments. Together with artist Dagmar Schürrer, you’ll learn how to integrate AI-driven dialogues using large language models (LLMs) into XR settings.
Working with the Unity software, you’ll be guided step by step in a practical, accessible way.

The focus is on creative experimentation:
How can an avatar respond, speak, think? And how can technology become a tool for artistic expression?

Please bring your own laptop. Installation instructions for the software will be sent shortly before the workshop.

Target group: Beginners and advanced users interested in exploring creative applications of AI in XR contexts. No prior knowledge required.

Time: 11 am – 3 pm
Group size: 15 participants
Language: German
Location: Mittelbau Kreativgesellschaft Stockmeyerstraße 43, 20457 Hamburg
Tickets: Eventbrite

Dagmar Schürrer works in the field of expanded animation and extended reality (XR) technologies. Her artistic practice is often inspired by scientific concepts from biology or neuroscience. In her hybrid works, she combines these with emerging technologies such as XR and artificial intelligence, digital worldbuilding, and poetic interpretations of human consciousness and its entanglement with the environment. By merging multilayered animations with spatial multimedia installations, she creates contemplative spaces for experience and reflection, offering a lens through which the evolving interplay between technology and human perception can be explored.
