When and where does VRHAM! Virtual Reality & Arts Festival take place?

Due to the effects of the Corona Pandemic and official restrictions, this year’s VRHAM! will take place as a predominantly digital festival. The festival program is live from 4 to 7 June 2020, our virtual exhibition even from 4 June to 4 August 2020. We named the 2020 edition VRHAM! VIRTUAL.

How exactly does a digtial festival work?

We invite you to experience VR art from the comfort of your own home on our virtual platforms (Museum of Other Realities and Magenta VR App), or to participate in our panels and live events via YouTube stream. For this, different technical equipment is required, but even without VR glasses you can take part live. Here you can find information on how to access the channels, and technical requirements.

Is the program the same it used to be?

The core of VRHAM! remains the same. We want to show outstanding artistic VR work from all over the world and present its creators. This year there will be our exhibition, live events and panels again. Just everything virtual, but with as much festival feeling as possible!

How is this going to work?

We are transforming our program into an almost real world of experience with virtual features. For example, you will find an exhibition hall in the virtual space that reminds you of our 2018 and 2019 venue in Hamburg’s Oberhafen. As in the physical festival, our virtual version in the Museum of Other Realities will offer you the opportunity to take part in guided tours, to talk to each other or simply to enjoy VR art. And all of this is free of charge!

Where can I find the program?

You can find our program including the exhibition, 360° films, all events, live program and panels on our website www.vrham.de. Please sign up for our newsletter or follow us on InstagramFacebookTwitter and Youtube to receive the latest updates.

Are there scheduled events and do I have to register?

Yes, our panels and live events take place at certain times. You can find the timetable and all further information on our website. Depending on the event type, you will also find a registration button and a direct link to the platform where our program will be shown. For our panels and live events you have to register with our ticketing partner Eventbrite. Participation is free of charge, but we are happy about donations!

Is there an opening event? Can I attend?

Yes, there is a virtual opening with guests and artists on 4 June 2020. The event will be streamed to our channels. You can find more information on our Live Program site.

Why aren’t you doing a completely virtual festival?

Personal encounters with the audience and the artists are a core element of festivals. This closeness and immediacy cannot be replaced by a virtual festival and of course we hope very much that we can invite you to a great festival in Hamburg’s Oberhafen next year. We do believe, though, that in the future there can always be a digital addition to our physical festival. With VRHAM! VIRTUAL we are running an experiment this year and we will see if it proves to be sustainable.

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) describes a computer-generated world with image and sound. VR glasses are needed to create an interactive virtual environment. You navigate in this world by movements of the head, of the hands, and speech. Motion sensors built into the VR glasses detect movements and transmit them in real time. This creates a direct interaction between the user and the virtual world.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (AR) is a computer-aided extension of the real world. The field of vision is supplemented with digital and virtual elements in such a way that it offers added value to the subject matter.

Both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are about the fusion of reality and virtual environment. However, this happens in different ways. In the case of VR, the user is completely immersed in the virtual world. The real world is faded out both visually and acoustically. With AR, the real world remains visible and is extended by virtual elements.

Remember that you enter a virtual world when you put on VR glasses. The real world is not visible through the glasses and therefore orientation is restricted. It is recommended to use the glasses only in a safe environment (free of objects) or while sitting to prevent disorientation, falls and dizziness.

VR technology allows you to be completely surrounded by images and sound in a virtual world. Through the complete immersion and the unrestricted presence in the virtual space, a deeper connection is created. You perceive the environment much stronger and the sensations are increased. There is a direct connection between the user and the virtual world.
