When and where does VRHAM! Virtual Reality & Arts Festival take place?

This year, due to the still ongoing Corona pandemic and regulatory requirements, our festival will take place as a hybrid edition. From 4 to 12 June, the latest virtual and augmented reality artworks will be shown worldwide – on site at Hamburg’s Oberhafenquartier and online at the virtual venue VRHAM! VIRTUAL.

How can I access the festival?

We basically offer you two ways to visit our festival: physically on site in our exhibition hall in the Oberhafenquartier with VR stations, in the Magenta VR Lounge and walk-in installations, or simply online from home via various channels, depending on how technically equipped you are. The best thing to do is to go to our website and choose directly on the home page whether you want to be part of VRHAM! physically or online.

What does a ticket cost and how does booking work?

The VRHAM! Festival in Hamburg’s Oberhafenquartier can be attended with a pre-booked ticket and individual time slot for the VREXHIBITION (60 minutes, freely selectable artworks for 11 euros) and the VR CINEMA (30 minutes, pre-curated program for 6 euros). On our website you will be redirected to the page of our ticketing partner Eventbrite and can then book your slot directly. Visiting our virtual venue VRHAM! VIRTUAL from home is free of charge, but we would be delighted if you supported us by purchasing a virtual ticket.

How are the hygienic conditions on site?

We have developed a comprehensive hygiene concept. According to the latest regulations of the city of Hamburg, you do not currently need a negative test result to visit our exhibition at the Oberhafen. We make sure everyone keeps their distance and allow you to enjoy a carefree art experience with specially disinfected VR glasses on site.

How can I visit the Virtual Venue?

We invite you to experience VR art in digital space from home via our virtual platforms (VRHAM! VRTUAL and Magenta VR App), or to participate in our panels and live events, for example via YouTube stream or our new desktop app. To do this, you need different technical equipment and you have to download different apps. It’s not that complicated. The best thing to do is to register right here so that you receive all the important information from us shortly before the festival, so you can enjoy the festival well prepared.

Do I always need VR glasses to visit VRHAM! VIRTUAL?

In order to experience our festival fully immersively, i.e. in three-dimensional space, you need VR glasses, which you can rent from us at a reasonable price and pick up at the festival center. However, this year we are also offering you the full festival experience in 2D. You can travel digitally to Hamburg’s Oberhafen via the website and stroll through the virtual venue. With the festival desktop app, in addition to the complete live programme, you can also experience all 360° films and interact with other festival visitors. Almost all events will be broadcast on the VRHAM! YouTube channel as the festival’s 2D streaming platform.

How can I experience the artworks? Is the program the same it used to be?

Once again we will be showing outstanding artistic VR works from around the world and introduce their creators. There’s our VREXHIBITION, the VR CINEMA and, for the first time, the IMMERSIVE INSTALLATIONS, live events and panels. It’s mostly virtual, but with as much festival feeling as possible! You can physically “walk through” two of the works directly on site, and view the other works in our virtual venue VRHAM! VIRTUAL.

How is this going to work?

VRHAM! VIRTUAL looks basically the same as the venue in Hamburg’s Oberhafen. As with previous physical festivals, VRHAM! VIRTUAL will provide the opportunity to stroll through designed spaces, talk to each other or simply enjoy VR art at your leisure.

Where can I find the program?

You can find our program including the exhibition, 360° films, all events, live program and panels on our website www.vrham.de. Please sign up for our newsletter or follow us on InstagramFacebookTwitter, Youtube and LinkedIn to receive the latest updates. For visitors to the physical exhibition in Hamburg’s Oberhafen we have prepared a program booklet that will be available on site.

Are there scheduled events and do I have to register?

Yes, our panels and live events take place at certain times. You can find the timetable and all further information on our website. Depending on the event type, you will also find a registration button and a direct link to the platform where our program will be shown. For our panels and live events you have to register with our ticketing partner Eventbrite. Participation is free of charge, but we are happy about donations!

Is there an opening event? Can I attend?

Yes, there will be a virtual opening on 4 June with guests and our artists. The event will be broadcast and can be followed live on our channels from 7pm, or you can join us in our venue VRHAM! VIRTUAL. All information and registration for the event can be found on our website.

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) describes a computer-generated world with image and sound. VR glasses are needed to create an interactive virtual environment. You navigate in this world by movements of the head, of the hands, and speech. Motion sensors built into the VR glasses detect movements and transmit them in real time. This creates a direct interaction between the user and the virtual world.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (AR) is a computer-aided extension of the real world. The field of vision is supplemented with digital and virtual elements in such a way that it offers added value to the subject matter.

Both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are about the fusion of reality and virtual environment. However, this happens in different ways. In the case of VR, the user is completely immersed in the virtual world. The real world is faded out both visually and acoustically. With AR, the real world remains visible and is extended by virtual elements.

Remember that you enter a virtual world when you put on VR glasses. The real world is not visible through the glasses and therefore orientation is restricted. It is recommended to use the glasses only in a safe environment (free of objects) or while sitting to prevent disorientation, falls and dizziness.

VR technology allows you to be completely surrounded by images and sound in a virtual world. Through the complete immersion and the unrestricted presence in the virtual space, a deeper connection is created. You perceive the environment much stronger and the sensations are increased. There is a direct connection between the user and the virtual world.
